Eat Out Thursday: Falafel Drive-In (San Jose)

Falafel Drive-In is a San Jose institution. It’s been around ever since I can remember, but I’m ashamed to say that I had never been there, even though my childhood dentist is right around the corner. FAIL!!! Looks like they’ve upgraded their sign recently, but I doubt much has changed since a couple, Anton and Zahie Nijmeh, opened in 1966. Their children run it now, according to their website.
On my way back from the dentist last week, I finally decided to stop here for lunch. Look at this line!
They have a plethora of Mediterranean dishes on the menu- here are the greatest hits. Love the photos that accompany the items.
As you can see on the top right of the above pic, they have a list of “Specials”. A large falafel with a banana shake for $7.50? Count me in.
The banana shake was THA BOMB! See those little brown speckles? That means they use real bananas! I didn’t ask what else is in it but it was creamy and awesome. My food consultant Solmaz bets it’s just milk and ice and bananas.
The large falafel was… HUGE!
Falafel, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers and tahini.
Check out the falafel!!! It’s green! These were incredible- fried but not all greasy. Fluffy and light. HOT as hell.
Special hot sauce. More sweet than hot, but I love me some homemade hot sauce.
How much did I enjoy my extra-large falafel??
This spot was on the Food Network show Diners Drive-Ins and Dives. Has anyone seen the show?
Man Jose loves Falafel Drive-In!

nice pics, kay!
they were on diners, drive-ins, and dives recently… looks like some seriously delish falafel.
Looks great! I remember this place being featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Saw the episode 5 times already and it looks really good. Need to try it someday.
