Slightly Peckish in NYC: Momofuku Noodle Bar + Misoya (East Village)

by Sakura

My first-ever visit to New York was with my sister and it flew by. It’s been four years since we travelled together and she’s always so much fun — we do a lot of laughing, shopping and, of course, eating. This time was no exception as we raced through the city to meet our friends for brunch, lunch and dinner. As a family of mixed-Japanese origin, I’m rather proud to say we started and ended our short holiday with ramen (we had no choice, it’s in our blood.)

MOMOFUKU NOODLE BAR

Ramen is booming in London at the moment but it took root in the States way sooner in a more tighter, deeper way — from instant ramen so beloved of college students to the more artisan kitchens for the truly addicted.

MOTO Restaurant Review: Eleven Madison Park (NYC)

by Moto

Though I created such a scene when I wrote about a certain four-star restaurant some time ago, I must write about my experience at Eleven Madison Park. Why?  Because it was above and beyond my expectations, and made me fully understand Daniel Humm‘s genius-ness. Plus it was lunch, over a glass of wine, hence I still remember what I ate.

MOTO Restaurant Review: Le Bernardin: Disagreeing with 4 Stars

by Moto

I recently became a permanent resident of this country, and to celebrate my newly acquired freedom, we went to Le Bernardin. Though I know a lot about food, I haven’t been to many top-notch restaurants because I end up bitching about its flaws. If you are paying $250 a person for a dining experience, don’t you expect it to be superb, from food to decor to service to every tiny aspect such as the flower arrangements, or how the tables are set up?

Drunken noodles at SriPraPhai in Woodside, Queens. From Umamiventure #4 in 2007. The savory hot sweetness of the dish still hovers in my memory.

Culinography: Top Chef Just Desserts with Pichet Ong

by Erin Gleeson

Last week, NYC pastry chef extraordinaire Pichet Ong was a guest judge on Top Chef Just Desserts (aired September 22).  As he was introduced, some of my photos of his desserts were shown on the episode: Foie Gras Taco and Warm Date Cake (see below). I shot the desserts in his restaurants P*ong and The Village Tart in Manhattan. Those restaurants are now closed unfortunately, but you can still find him, and his desserts, at his newest NYC projects, Qi and Coppelia.

Culinography: Hot Summer Slices

by Erin Gleeson

The afternoon I took this picture in Hell’s Kitchen was one of the steamiest days this summer, but that didn’t stop New Yorkers from loving HOT 99¢ slices. I have a feeling I might look back at this picture in 20 years and be shocked at how cheap a slice was (I’m even a little shocked now!).

Happy Hour: Pusser’s v. Painkiller

by Payman Bahmani

The Painkiller

In the past week there’s been a lot of buzz in cocktail circles regarding the outcome of a legal dispute between Pusser’s rum and Painkiller, a tiki bar in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. It’s a story that’s led to a lot of anger among us folks in the cocktail biz, as it touches on a number of issues we consider important, so I figured I’d touch on it here.

Skankynavia: In the US (Part 2)

PREFACE
Skankynavia: In the US (Part 1 – Berkeley)

Last week I listened to the great NYC radioshow called RadioLab. They deal with quirky science and interesting true stories, and last week’s subject was “memory” (a rerun from 2007, listen here). It turns out that every time you remember something, and when you revisit a certain piece of stored information in your brain, you actually reprogram it.
