My mama came home with this box of hot, just-made takoyaki (octopus balls) the other day. I guess they were having an "Osaka Fair" at our neighborhood Mitsuwa, where there was a booth from this famous takoyaki joint in Osaka called Kukuru.
When I looked at the box closer, I recognized the picture of the giant octopus from when I was actually in Osaka! It was the gigantic sign above the shop on Dotombori!!!
After my initial shock, I have to say that I was weirded out by the whole thing. Is nothing authentic anymore? Why must restaurants feel the need to brand themselves??? Japan does this all of the time- like Ricky's ramen review last week of a well-known ramen shop in Saitama. I mean, what's the point of having this special, localized, Osakan experience, if I can get it at my Mitsuwa in San Jose, California???
It's just a bit outrageous, if you think about it. But fuck it, they were good.
