UMAMI MART MATSURI FESTIVAL

Last week Yoko was in town and she took me to Gregoire, a little French take-out spot in Berkeley (now also one in Oakland). They serve an array of lovely sandwiches during lunch ($8 max), and expand their menu to meat and seafood entrees for dinner (a bit pricey for take-out at $16.75 max, but all organic fancypants).

With only a few tables outside, and a couple of seats at the counter inside, you should plan on eating the meal elsewhere. But let me tell you that take-out has never been presented more creatively, which makes the meal feel super special- even if you are eating on your tattered couch.

You see that fork above? It's PLASTIC!!!! They give you a plastic fork that looks like silverware- how luxurious is that??? Funny story: when the cashier girl was putting the fork into my bag, I actually refused it cause I thought it was real- I assumed she thought I was gonna be eating in. Little that I know that it was NOT REAL. Gregoire Amateur.

Open the box, and you're greeted with black and white checkered wax paper. Swoon. Here's my "Slow cooked roast beef with cumin slaw & chipotle Russian dressing on rye bread." They throw in a little side too- this day was macaroni salad.

It's the little things in life that matter- and eating a roast beef sandwich out of an octagonal cardboard bed lined with checkered sheets is one of them.

Here's the bag that it comes in too- it's just too cute, I can't handle it. Their logo is so catchy.

  • Yeah Gregoire’s supposed to be the shit. My brother used to rave about it all the time when he lived in Berkeley. The chef used to work at Chez Panisse and left to open up shop down the street.
