It's that time of year: sanma time. Sanma aka Pike Mackerel aka Pacific saury, is a wonderful seasonal fish to celebrate autumn in Japan. My favorite time of the year!

We just got back from Aburiya Kinnosuke, where they have been serving a sanma lunch special since last week for $13. Check out this spread! The fish is rubbed down with salt, then grilled on a stick behind the bar robata style. Look at all these goodies this lunch includes: miso soup with nameko mushrooms, eggplant and cucumber pickles (shibazuke), homemade tofu, kinpira gobo (burdock root) doused in mayo, and little pack of seasoned seaweed. This is seriously a dreamy traditional Japanese meal, usually served for breakfast.

They sell out pretty quick, so try to get there on the early side. There are no guarantees, but my guess is that the sanma should be on the menu at least through October. It's a very special treat- go now before they swim away for another year.

  • I am currently going sanma crazy right now too here in Tokyo. They are so cheap and wonderfully versatile for anything – sashimi or grilled.
