Sake Gumi
Spent a day in San Francisco with my girl Vanessa- we walked around Hayes Valley, and stepped into this charming little candy shop, Miette. It's a colorful fantasyland for anyone with a serious sweet tooth- you're transported to a candy shop from the 1950s, with a huge selection of candies and chocolates, plus beautiful, organic baked goodies.

Miette has a delightful, pastel-hued, "cottagey" aesthetic- think Great Gatsby when they visit the Hamptons. Walls are line with jars and jars of jelly beans, gum drops, licorice, caramels, taffy, candy-sprinkled chocolates, and on. All you need is a martini in hand- it would be pink of course!

Talking with the really sweet shopgirls (pun intended), I learned that Miette started out as two women making organic cakes and selling them at the Berkeley Farmer's Market. They opened up a cakeshop in the Ferry Building, and just opened this candy shop, or confiserie, in 2007. Check out these darling cakes:

They even make macarons (cookies!!!)! I got a boxful of them- pistachio, strawberry, rose geranium, chocolate lavender and hazelnut. I think the rose geraniums were my favorite, although I'm a sucker for pistachio anything.

Yamahomo, please make me a gumball tree.As far as I know, I haven't encountered a shop like this anywhere in NY- it's a unique, sweet color explosion that makes you happy just walking in. I wish I lived closer- those macarons were seriously delicious.
