UMAMI MART MATSURI FESTIVAL
In the spirit of March Madness, the heaven-sent blog LA Taco has posted their Elite 8 bracket for Taco Madness 2009. Since college basketball's Elite 8 commences tonight I thought it would be appropriate to post an expert breakdown of the Taco Madness match-ups by my friend and taco maven Ignacio "Nacho" Garcia--the man is the Dick Vitale of tacos!

Below is his analysis of the head-to-head match-ups, posted from an email.

Aw man, this is better than the tourney!

King Taco vs. Taco Zone
My bookies tell me that KT is favored to take the whole thing.

Yuca's vs. Cactus Taqueria
This is predicted to be a close one, probably because not a lot of people have heard of them. I'm more familiar with the quality that Yuca's has produced in the past, so I had to give them the nod.

Kogi vs. Tito's Tacos
This is closer than it should be. Kogi is the oddmakers favorite right now because they're new to the game and they've been getting the job done. Tito's also has a love/hate relationship with its own supporters, so they're not going to make up any points to Kogi once they fall behind. Looks like Kogi is taking this one.

Tacos Por Favor vs. Tacos Baja Ensenada
Although Tacos Por Favor vs. Tacos Baja Ensenada is close, TPF will pull away late in the game, as they always do. People realize that TBE is just not the same as it once was.

As you can clearly see, the man's taco game is solid. Personally I think Mexico's reign over the L.A. taco kingdom is seriously threatened by the Koreans, as Kogi's innovative approach could prove too much for any defense to handle. Home court advantage is not what it used to be.

  • Love that we’ve got a Vitale in the house!!! I wish I could throw down some LA taco knowledge here, but I’ll let you LAers hash this one out. Thanks for holdin’ it down, Nacho!

One question though: how did Best Fish Tacos in Ensenada not make the cut???

  • or better yet, pizza, as it’s something in which NY can really claim a decent amount of exclusivity.

  • Hadley, awesome blog!!! We’re all major fans over here, please keep it up.

Paystyle and I were discussing the logistics of doing something like this for real… like a full on tourney in a high school football field or something. Is this something in the works at all? It would rock!

  • Thanks for all the support friends. Check out our homie Adam’s blog on NY Pizza at sliceny.com. I had the pleasure of being Adam’s west coast editor at Ahamburgertoday.com before focusing on L.A. finest tacos as well. RAspect!!
