This sake cup is meant for fugu hirezake, a style of sake in which dried blowfish fins are seared and set to steep in atsukan (hot sake). This is immensely popular among ojiisan (grandfathers/old men) in the wintertime in Japan. However, this can be enjoyed any time of the year!
The cup is plenty deep and has a matching lid meant to capture the aroma of the steeped hirezake.
The lid also doubles as a plate to rest the blowfish fins once the drink is ready. It can also act as a catch tray for when you partake in "nihonshu overflow," the celebratory act of over-pouring sake to symbolize plentifulness and gratitude.
