Travel into the wild with these meticulously designed furoshiki (wrapping cloth) by artist duo Takeshi Matsunaga and Chie Takai of Kata Kata. Because of its large size, this furoshiki works great as a wrapping cloth, bag, tablecloth, or hang these special pieces on your walls for festive animal-themed decorations.
Both katazome and chusen methods are used to create this furoshiki. Katazome is a complicated stenciling and printing process involving natural materials such as persimmon juice, seaweed, water, and wind. Chusen is a Meiji-era technique involving hand-dying each furoshiki to produce varied and unique results. Check out this blog post on Hello! "Bears have always been my spirit animal. It makes my heart jump whenever I see them pop up in an episode of Nature. Two reasons I've always felt a kinship with bears is because my last name is Kumano (Bear Field, in Japanese) and I was born in California. I love the depiction of the bruin in this furoshiki, depicting a bear, hugging a large smiling salmon! I imagine myself as the bear, ready to indulge in some salmon sashimi. And after that I'd dip my large paw into a honeybee hive and have some honey for dessert (which is essentially what I do as a beekeeper)." - Yoko
