Kappa no Sasoi Mizu uses local Miyazaki Beni Kotobuki sweet potatoes to achieve the complex, tannic notes of blueberry and grapefruit in this shochu, accented by an overall clean profile and mouthfeel thanks to the use of white koji. While sporting a more austere label and bottle one would normally associate with more traditional old-school shochu brands, Sasoi Mizu is distilled at a low temperature and diluted down to 20% abv, all hallmarks of the more modern natsu shochu (summer shochu) that's very popular in Japan; these techniques result in a drink that's quite crisp and refreshing right out of the bottle.
We like to chill this shochu and enjoy from a wine glass, or drink it on the rocks - it doesn't need water! On the nose we get an interesting array of grapefruit and calamata olive with a satisfying yet not-too-overwhelming finish of brownie ice cream... Sound interesting? It is, you should try it. Alternatively, you can warm this up the same way you would a warm sake to enjoy a cozy and enveloping texture.
