Sake and Shochu Gumi

We found these vintage matcha bowls at a warehouse of an importer who got their start in the 1970s. We couldn’t resist “rescuing” these beauties despite not knowing much about their origin. The irregular shapes and one-of-a-kind feel of each bowl makes every bowl of matcha made in them feel unique and ephemeral.

We named these bowls after our favorite winter treat, hoshigaki (dried persimmon) because the deep copper hue reminded us of rustic persimmons drying in the winter.
