Sake and Shochu Gumi

We found these vintage matcha bowls at a warehouse of an importer who got their start in the 1970s. We couldn’t resist “rescuing” these beauties despite not knowing much about their origin. The irregular shapes and one-of-a-kind feel of each bowl makes every bowl of matcha made in them feel unique and ephemeral.

We named these bowls after the shores of Saga Prefecture in the nighttime. The ink black ocean collides with the shore producing a shimmering rainbow of blues, browns, and white.

You may notice a light crackle glaze on the interior of the bowl, accentuated by matcha. Please note that this is intentional and not harmful.
