Umami Mart Gift Guide

We are honored to welcome two brewers from Japan whose sakes we'll be debuting with Namazake Paul in California! Namazake Paul has been working closely with Takeda Shuzo and Kikkawa Jozo to bring the freshest brews into the U.S.

Paul will join us from Portland, Oregon, bringing Goto-san from Kikkawa Jozo of Kanagawa and Takeda-san of Takeda Shuzo in coastal Niigata. These very unique unpasteurized sake are like nothing you've tried before. This tasting includes snacks specifically selected to pair by our local favorite Egg Pals. Don't miss this opportunity to meet the breweries and try out some fun food pairings!

We'll be tasting through the following sakes:
Takeda Tokubetsu Honjozo Nama Genshu
Afuri The Night Mist No. 77 Oborosake
Afuri Shin-saku Junmai Sugiyamaryu Nama
Afuri Terra/Y Yamahai Junmai

Get a sticker pass for $50 and visit each brewer behind the bar to try all the sakes and nibble on some bites!

Takeda Shuzo (Niigata)
Takeda Shuzo is located in the coastal fishing village of Joetsu. Seizaemon Takeda started brewing in Kamiko Funatsu, a small fishing boat moorage, at the end of the Edo Period (1866). In 1990, Shigenori Takeda was appointed the current director and he is now joined by his son Haruki. They have only two other brewery workers.

Kikkawa Jozo (Kanagawa)
Founded in 1912, Kikkawa Jozo started out making rich and dry style sakes. The seventh generation chief brewer Masanori Mizuno Toji took over in 2012 changing its focus to delicate, complex, and ginjo in style sakes. At the same time, he’s using ancient acid production techniques, very cold fermentation, and uses very low-polished rice, resulting in unique acidity, and brothy flavors.
