Sake and Shochu Gumi

Celebrate Hinamatsuri (Girl's Day), with us! All are welcome for one of our favorite events of the year (Umami Mart is a girl-powered business!). Come check out the impressive display of dolls and enjoy Japanese sweets, snacks, and amazake (sweet, non-alcoholic sake) by Oakland's Den Sake.

In Japan, Hinamatsuri is a day to reflect and celebrate a young woman’s strength, health, and happiness. We at Umami Mart use this opportunity to celebrate all women, young and old. But you don't have to be a woman to join us; this party is for everyone and it's a great time for the whole family.

Hinamatsuri is also known as Doll Festival. Ornamental dolls are made or displayed to ward off misfortune and pray for happiness. Every year, we bring out our ohinasama set, a five-tiered display of traditional Japanese dolls that Yoko's mom hand-clothed. It took her over a decade to complete the whole set, which depicts a royal court from the Emperor and Empress at the top to the samurai protectors on the bottom tier.

Let's hear it for the girls!

Can't make on the 23rd? The dolls will be on display from 2/12-2/23. Stop by during store hours to see them on display.
