Studio Arhoj, long known for ceramics design for the tabletop and decorative interiors, has recently added glassware production to its studio. Located in the heart of Copenhagen, their giant new space is a retail storefront with a glass window peeking into the ceramics and glass-blowing studio where their products are thrown, blown, and fired right there.

But long before Studio Arhoj started, founder Anders Arhoj was a children's website designer and illustrator, who went to Tokyo in 2005 for a year to take a break from the profession and learn Japanese. There, he met Umami Mart founder Yoko Kumano, and a lifelong friendship blossomed.

Arhoj has been essential to Umami Mart from the beginning: he was a frequent contributor to the blog with his popular Skankynavia column, and was our principal designer when we opened our doors in downtown Oakland in 2012. Since, Arhoj has been a part of each design transformation of Umami Mart, from our Conbini and Bottle System, to our new space with a tasting bar. And of course we have been carrying and selling out of Studio Arhoj products all along the way.

Join us as we talk to Arhoj over Zoom for an intimate discussion over brunch and cocktails, about Studio Arhoj's evolution in brand and production, as well as our decade of collaboration and friendship, and his concepts for Umami Mart then and now.
