When Goro Yamazaki, fifth generation President of Otokoyama Sake Brewery visited us in July of 2024, he brought this unusual sake that boasts the emblem of a shogun. Otokoyama was one of the few breweries whose sake was recognized by the Tokugawa shogunate in 1733. These sakes are referred to as Gomenshu. Yamazaki-san explained that although this sake is not the exact replica of the sake that was brewed in those days, it is an homage to this part of their heritage as a brewery.
This sake is assertive as a shogun. A golden appearance is complemented by aromas of creamy pecans and caramel. The sake is slightly tart, with notes of cedar that reminded us of taruzake, but feels surprisingly light in finish most likely due to the fact that it's only 14% alcohol. Yamazaki-san says that this sake pairs well with Chinese cuisines.
Sip it while watching season 1 of Shogun!
