Studio Arhoj

Book Club Riso Print

Regular price $42.00

This limited series of prints celebrates the release of the book Everyday Sake, written by Umami Mart in Oakland, California, with illustrations by Anders Arhoj of Copenhagen’s Studio Arhoj.  Everyday Sake is a go-to guide for choosing, pairing, and serving sake, and the motifs of these prints are directly from the pages of the book.

This illustration comes from page 204 of the book with references for further learning and education. This print is an ode to our book club here at Umami Mart!

We hope you enjoy this limited Arhoj x Umami Mart collaboration Riso Work!

Riso (‘ideal’ in Japanese) is a vivid and bold printing technique from Japan where layers of eco-friendly soy-based ink color are applied via a rolling drum and rice paper stencils.

The process is similar to screen printing, but on a  machine that looks not unlike an office copier.

Riso printing is known for its specific texture that does not  guarantee perfection but instead encourages experimentation  and an embrace of the imperfections (misregistrations, roller marks, smudges etc) that the process produces.

Often the layered printing process and these imperfections give a ‘handmade and fantastically unique feel to the prints. Each is different.
