Furuse Gyozo

Akahada Nara Deer Plate

Regular price $40.00

We love this small plate in the shape of a deer, Nara's sacred protector. This dish can be used for wagashi (sweets) or soy sauce, and can also be used as an accessory plate for small jewelry. This also makes a great soap dish!

There was a time when Akahada pottery was made exclusively for the local shrines and priests, and we are so lucky to carry these special ceramics.

Please note: each piece by Furuse Gyozo is unique – enjoy these handmade pieces and their subtle differences and glazes ranging from white, pink, and powder blue.

Furuse Gyozo is in its 8th generation ownership under Noriko Furuse, who lives on site of the three kilns where the Akahada pottery is designed, fired, and finished. The signature Akahada red clay is sourced from her back yard, a material that has been used for pottery since the 1500s. The result are pieces that express unique hues like white, pink, and powder blue. Read about Yoko's visit to Furuse Gyozo on our blog!
