Join Our Team as a Shop Keeper

Umami Mart seeks a friendly, smart, and take-charge Shop Keeper. We are a small retail shop specializing in Japanese sake + spirits, barware, glassware, and homewares.

This position will be at our shop located in Oakland, California and will be for 20 hours per week (4x 5 hour shifts). Applicants must be able to work a minimum 4 days a week (weekends mandatory), filling in as-needed, as well as extra shifts in November and December during the holiday season. Although the bar is closed right now, there will be opportunities for extra hours behind the bar as we open up.

We require your full support and availability between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve season.

Umami Mart seeks out a Shop Keeper who:

• Enjoys being part of a small, but growing team. Wants to be a key player in Umami Mart's growth.
  
• Ensures delivery of excellent customer service in store, curbside, via email, and on the phone
  
• Is genuinely interested in the products we carry. (bartender tools, ceramics, whisky, sake, shochu, beer, etc.). A passion for food, drink, design, and Japan is not required, but is a definite plus.
  
• Is punctual and reliable.
  
• Strong (can schlep up to 50 lbs, take out the trash, etc.). Lots of schlepping!
  
• Not afraid to get dirty; this is a physically demanding job including, moving boxes, cleaning floors, being around dumpsters.
  
• Can take direction easily and open to constructive criticism.
  
• Can communicate and build relationships with customers.
  
• Has a strong work ethic.
  
• Has a flexible schedule; can potentially take on more days.
  
• Confident with working on their own and/or with a team.
  
• Able to multitask and prioritize responsibilities.
  
• Retail experience a plus.
  
• Loves to clean and organize (due to new COVID protocol, surfaces and bathrooms need frequent cleaning). Bathrooms must be cleaned after each shift (everyone will take turns).
  
• At least 21 years old due to alcohol sales.

Responsibilities include:

• Welcoming customers and being attentive to their needs and requests. Giving excellent customer service over the phone and online. 
  
• Receiving vendor shipments from delivery personnel. Signing for deliveries.
  
• Lots of schlepping! Boxes can be up to 50 lbs. 
  
• Cleaning bathroom, break room, and surfaces based on Social Distance Protocol (posted at entrance, by back door, and in the break room)
  
• Trash and Recycling after each shift 
  
• Learning about products and how to use them
  
• Learning about sakes and drinks and how to best consume them
  
• Opening and closing the shop, helping customers, ringing up customers
  
• Tallying cash drawer at the beginning and end of the day; matching against the day’s sales
  
• Maintaining shop cleanliness, including spot-cleaning, mopping, dusting, straightening product, restocking product on sales floor
  
• Making sure all items are priced
  
• Making gift sets
  
• Packing online orders
  
• Ordering stock and supplies for the shop
  
• Experience with email correspondence and knowledge of email etiquette preferred
