Part-Time Shopkeeper


 

Umami Mart – a retail store specializing in kitchen and barware from Japan, as well as a bottle shop dedicated to sake and Japanese beer – seeks a friendly, responsible, and take-charge Shopkeeper. This position is part-time at our shop in Old Oakland at 815 Broadway. Applicants must be able to work Saturdays (10 a.m.-6:30 p.m.), one weekday, and during the holidays. This position starts as soon as the first week of August.


RESPONSIBILITIES





  • Welcoming customers and staying attentive to their needs and requests. Suggesting products to customers. Taking special orders and requests when possible.




  • Opening and closing the shop, helping customers, creating gift sets as requested, charging customers, accepting exchanges and returns.




  • Maintaining customer relationships to grow the Umami Mart community.




  • Tallying cash drawer at the beginning and end of the day; matching against the day’s sales.




  • Maintaining cleanliness throughout the shop, including spot-cleaning/mopping, dusting products, straightening items on tables and shelves, re-stocking items on the floor.




  • Making sure all items are priced, making labels.




  • Packing online orders.




  • Ordering stock and supplies for the shop.




  • Unpacking deliveries, receiving items, stocking items accordingly.




  • Accepting mail and placing in appropriate files folders.




  • Referring customers to the blog when applicable.




QUALIFICATIONS





  • Is friendly, outgoing, has a positive attitude, and a good sense of humor. Has great customer service skills and gets along with co-workers and managers.




  • Is punctual, responsible, and reliable.




  • Enjoys being part of a small, growing team.




  • Has a genuine interest in Umami Mart, including the products and services we offer, our events, and our overall brand.




  • Has the ability to lift a maximum of 50 lbs and won't scoff at breaking down boxes and taking out the recycling.




  • A passion for food, Japanese drink culture, and design is not required, but is a definite plus.




  • Can work on weekends and holidays, but ideally, has a flexible schedule to cover shifts.




Pay is $14/hr. A 90-day probationary period will apply. Please send your cover letter and resume to shop@umamimart.com.
