tokkuri is, quite simply, a sake carafe. They are ubiquitous throughout Japan and most ceramicist and glass-blowers' portfolios would be naked without at least one - the tokkuri's image is symbolic of sake drinking by sight alone. The Stem Tokkuri is a fantastically subversive piece of functional glass art, taking an object so "clutch-able" in nature and instead having you grasp it (pinky out) by its hand-blown delicate glass stem. It's fun and imaginative, and definitely one-of-a-kind.

We'll be waiting patiently for a glass stemmed coffee mug.

We first discovered the Stem Tokkuri on our 2022 visit to the Kimura Showroom in Tokyo, along with its partner, the Stem Hirahai. We were floored by the singular beauty and utter indulgence of these pieces - it felt like they were made for Umami Mart!

Note: While we recommend pairing this glass with the Stem Hirahai, these pieces are sold separately.

Established in 1910, Kimura Glass Company in Eastern Tokyo has been making beautiful handcrafted glassware that only craftsmen with decades of experience can create. We chose a select few pieces from the Kimura collection that reflects the Umami Mart lifestyle – cocktail and sake pieces, of course!
