Mikkeller Tasting Room Now Open in Oakland!
Oakland just got a little bit hipper (if that was at all possible) – we now have our very own Mikkeller bar! Opened in the former Trappist Provisions space, the tasting room and bottle shop is a charming ode to all things Mikkeller.
Mikkeller launched as a beer brewery in Copenhagen in 2006. They are an innovative company brewing one-off beers with all sorts of outlandish ingredients (who doesn't want a beer brewed with Kopi Luwak coffee beans?), with different collaborators from all over the world. In 2013, they opened a brew pub in San Francisco, their first outside of Copenhagen, and most recently they opened a brewery in San Diego.
What has drawn masses of beer lovers to Mikkeller is their ability to make beer fun. The bottles are not cheap, but they exude an adventurous spirit that draws people in and is never pretentious. Their book is awesome too!
A lot of this charm and spirit has to do with the genius label designs by American artist Keith Shore. The designs of the Mikkeller's Art Director are wonderfully goofy and whimsical. Shore's work adorns the walls of the Oakland Tasting Room.
I love this splash of blue!
From a branding perspective, Mikkeller runs a very tight ship. Not one detail is overlooked – from the menu, to the merch, to the "Open" sign on the door, to the gift boxes. The Oakland tasting room is a Mikkeller wonderland for packaging whores and beer nerds alike.
There are 12 Mikkeller beers on tap (try the Acid Trip White Wine), or you can get a bottle to enjoy right there or to take home.
They do serve some snacks, but the menu is not as expansive as the San Francisco tap room. It is just the perfect place to relax after a hard work day or to bring friends from out of town.
Congrats, guys on a fantastic opening! Oakland is so excited to have you.
