Postcard from Japan: Kissaten Life

We are really enjoying the kissaten (cafe) lifestyle here in Japan and we have visited several in Tokyo and Fukushima during our travels. Unlike Starbucks or other branded coffee shops, kissaten are a place to unwind, have a smoke, sip a cup of joe and perhaps order a pressed sandwich. They are all unique and have their own distinctive flair -- whether it be porcelain coffee cups (plain or embellished?) or the roast style of the coffee beans (one shop in Tokyo roasted beans upon ordering). Customers are loyal and regulars greet the cafe owner by name. It is a cozy place to find a moment of peace from hectic everyday life.
