Sake and Shochu Gumi

San Francisco, we have arrived! Umami Mart opened inside The Perish Trust last Friday November 1 and we'll be here through the holidays. This is truly a dream for us -- to share our wares with the big City by the Bay! Our friends Kelly and Rod, owners of The Perish Trust, came to us with a genius idea a few months ago: would Umami Mart like to pop-up inside their space? Hell yah!

Kelly and Rod have been so accommodating and supportive this past month as we turned their back kitchen/ breakroom/ storage space into an Umami Mart Mini. It really is!

We consulted Umami Mart president of design, Anders Arhoj, for our pop-up. But really, we just took all the elements of our Oakland flagship, and shrunk it down into a space a quarter of the size. Yoko and I, along with many of our friends, got down on our hands and knees to paint, drill, and sand. And most importantly, install the lights!

How did we choose which products to bring over? Yoko and I boiled it down to the Umami Mart classics -- a mix of barware, books, glassware, coffee and tea accessories, prints by Anders and mugs by Atelier Dion. Our greatest hits!

We hosted a soft opening party and invited friends old and new. It was great to see everyone!

Neyah White generously donated some highly-coveted Suntory whisky for highballs and even bartended all night. He was at our Oakland opening party so it was very symbolic that he would join us for our SF opening.

Like our Oakland flagship, our SF space has been a labor of love with help from all of our family and friends. A special hug and THANK YOU to the following folks for helping us beautify our space: Anders Arhoj, Micah Chong, Will Davies, DM Kishi, Cindy Kumano, Cindy Liu and Sasha Mortezaei. And a big THANK YOU to Rod and Kelly for inviting us into their cozy home! And of course thanks always to Johnny and Washi for being supportive of me and Yoko.

Let the good times roll!
